Previously home to the city’s oldest business in continuous family ownership and operation, a blacksmith shop established in 1886, Geist Bar and Restaurant opened in early 2018. In Nashville’s Historic Germantown Neighborhood, DAAD undertook the meticulous restoration to preserve the original architecture and make energy efficient and safety improvements.
The exterior brickwork was extensively cleaned and repointed where required, with care taken to preserve the fading business signage painted on the east side of the building. The skylights were rebuilt and reglazed with tempered glass. Interior doors and other elements were removed and stored for future use. The flooring in the forge building was salvaged along with the joists, and a new floor structure was installed aligning the floor level of the forge with that of the adjacent dwelling.
