Williams Family Residence

Nashville, Tennessee

Expanding an historic home under the auspices of an Historic Zoning Commission can be a lengthy and challenging process. DA|AD assisted the Williams Family with this task by designing an addition that was sympathetic to the original, yet clearly new construction. Care was taken with exterior details such as modeling new eave brackets after the ornate brackets of the original house, yet making them simpler to show deference to the historic craftsmanship.

The 866-square-foot addition contains three bedrooms and two full baths. The master suite included a covered porch looking out into the beautifully landscaped back yard. To gain Commission approval, the new structure is of a similar scale to the original, and connected well back from the front façade so that it would resemble another house. Both the existing and new portions were painted the same color, tying them visually together.
