The Ryan Residence

Nashville, Tennessee

A Nashville songwriter approached DA|AD for a design on this new construction, infill project in the historic Germantown section of Nashville. The client wanted the house to compliment the area’s historic charm while simultaneously introducing a fresh interpretation of traditional detailing. DA|AD met this goal by evaluating more traditional forms and methods of construction such as brick, stone and salvaged timbers.

The finished home is 5,000 ft2 single family residence with a separate garden apartment, like many area historic residences. The main floor has a circular library/office adjacent to the entry. The stair is a freestanding, compound curve that soars through the entry hall. The living space is open from front to rear, terminated by a 12’ wide door which opens onto a beautiful stone terrace. The floors and kitchen countertops are reclaimed bowling alley floors salvaged from local landmark Melrose Lanes which was demolished in 2005. DA|AD reclaimed all 30 lanes of this memorable Nashville landmark.

The floor plan is modern and open, with classic details. It has 4-bedrooms and 3 baths along with the artist’s studio and library. In historic style, ceilings on the main level are 14 feet high. The second floor is composed of 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, the studio and laundry. Also, a second floor covered terrace is cantilevered off the south side of the house to capture views of downtown Nashville.
