The Radnor Residence

Nashville, Tennessee

Radnor Lake Natural Area is one of the largest pockets of wilderness in the United States in close proximity to a major city, and it is a beloved treasure in Nashville. Acquire a 1960’s-era split level adjoining the park and you know you have something that deserves special treatment! Such is the case when Delta Design & Development turned to DA|AD to completely renovate this ranch house into a modern home deserving of such a setting.

The resulting 4,425 square foot private residence embodies rustic contemporary elements which embrace its natural setting. The project explores ideas of conservation, re-use, and sustainability from the foundation to the downspout leaders. Salvaged materials from the existing structure and site were used throughout. Telephone poles, ridge beams, lumber scraps, and the original concrete slab were integrated into the new structure with the intention to educate about the beauty of sustainability.

New exterior features reflect the amazing setting. Vertical expressions in the structure, such as the board and batten siding and salvaged telephone poles/columns, were designed to relate to the trees. The horizontal elements in the porch railing and stacked foundation relate to the topography and nearby lake. To foster the indoor-outdoor lifestyle, a rock garden was built as a literal outdoor room within the hillside.
