Adagio Spa

Nashville, Tennessee

The mission to create a meditative space for a massage therapy spa with tight space constraints and an extremely low budget was met by the architects assisting in the fabrication and assembly critical elements in the design. With only 396 sq. ft. to work with and 4 major program elements to accommodate, the spa functions with the aid of 3 pivoting doors that can be arranged in multiple positions. This moving wall is also translucent, giving clients privacy while keeping the space well illuminated with natural light.

As one enters the consultation area, he/ she will meet with a therapist and receive information about the massage or hydro-therapy they will be undergoing. At this time, the doors will all be open to promote a free-space environment. Once in the massage therapy area, the doors will be closed and the therapist will wait in the consultation area until the client is ready. After the treatment, clients are given the freedom to shower in the hydro-therapy area. With natural slate, exposed brick, exposed wood ceiling joists, naturally stained concrete, waxed mahogany and translucently illuminated pivot doors, the palette is soothing with a rich array of materials. The sink in the restroom was custom designed and filled with Japanese River Stones that are used during hot stone therapy.
