Winberry Place

Nashville, Tennessee (East Nashville)

Vernon Winfrey's Barber Shop has been a cornerstone of the east Nashville neighborhood since long before Winfrey was a household name. It is the kind of small business that gives neighborhoods their identity, and now that Winfrey and his wife Barbara have formed B&V Development to infuse new energy and commerce into the east Nashville block surrounding the barber shop, the new storefront will continue to serve its place in the community for years to come.

Winberry Place will be a mixed-use development featuring shops and homes fronting Vernon Winfrey Avenue and Lischey Avenue. Slated to break ground in early 2008, it features six single family homes, three condominiums, three apartments, and retail space on .82 acres. The Winfrey's strive to give the half block-sized area in East Nashville a renewed sense of neighborhood and community. Vernon Winfrey's Barber Shop will serve as the anchor tenant in the 3,000 square foot retail location, along with a salon and one additional neighborhood-oriented business. Above the commercial space will be three one bedroom apartments (for rent). The development's plan is based on the Metro Planning Department's Detailed Neighborhood Design Plan which calls for higher intensity mixed use development at the intersection of Vernon Winfrey and Lishey Avenues. Although the DNDP allows a maximum of three stories in these buildings, we chose to limit the height to two stories allowing for a more harmonious transition back into the single family residential scale of the surrounding neighborhood.
